This is an International Baccalaureate English Literature Class. The work is challenging and demands that you develop your abilities in the field of literary criticism as well as continuing your progress in reading, writing, speaking and critical thinking. It is also hoped that this course will strengthen your interest in reading literature. This is the 1st year of a 2-year course. In this course, we will cover Part 1 and Part 4 requirements: Options and Works in Translation.
The Learning Standards for this course, are made up of those set forth by the IB and the Common Core. Your grade will be determined by proficiency in meeting the Standards. In addition to academic standards, you will be held accountable for your ability to meet the characteristics of the IB Learner Profile. |
Class Culture and Expectations
- Be Present - in mind and body: The work we have to do can only benefit you if you are here. Come ready to think and be your best self. Give it all you’ve got. If you’ve got something to share, questions to ask, concerns to raise – do it! This is your education – own it!
- Be Prepared: Come prepared to class. This means bringing your laptop, your journal (specifically for this class), any necessary materials/handouts/homework, a book to read, and an open mind.
- Be Respectful: Listen to one another. Be willing to hear new views and opinions - you don't have to agree, but there is something to learn from new perspectives.
Proficiency Grading
Proficiency grading means that you earn a passing grade in the class by demonstrating you can meet the learning targets or standard - ultimately, you can do the skills and understand the content. Think of it this way. A standard is the task you are ultimately supposed to be able to accomplish. At home, you might be asked to clean the kitchen. A clean kitchen would be the standard. In order to get a clean kitchen, there are lots of things you would need to do - those are the learning targets (the skills and content needed to complete the standard). So in order to have a clean kitchen, you'd wipe the counters, put dishes away, clean the floors, clean the stove, etc. At the end, if you've done all the learning targets related to the standard - you'd have a clean kitchen. If you meet all the learning targets - you meet the standards. When you meet the standards, you are proficient. When you are proficient - you earn a passing grade.
On StudentVue and ParentVue you will not see letter grades or percents for assignments. What you will see are the following:
4 = Exemplary or Exceeding Proficiency
3 = Proficient
2.5 = Approaching Proficiency
2 = Developing
1 = Missing Work
A passing grade translates to a 2.5 and a letter grade of a C. If you want to earn higher than a C - you'll need to work a little harder. You might have to work with more complex texts, write in more sophisticated ways, or exhibit work that serves as a model for the expectations.
IB Assessments
In addition, whether you are officially taking the IB Exams for the course, all learners will complete the Internal IB Assessments. For Semester 1, it is the Individual Oral Presentation. For Semester 2, it is the Written Assignment (a 300-400 word reflective statement and a 1,200-1,500 Literary Analysis Essay).
