Welcome!
If you're taking a class with Ms. Keri Troehler, then this website is for you! We will study various themes, issues, and topics throughout the year - all related to the world we live in today, the history that brought us here, and how culture both reflects and impacts who we are and how we interact with the world.
In IB Literature, although our focus remains on literature, we will also spend time exploring non-fiction, film, art, and other texts. The goal is that you will continue to develop your ability to closely read texts, write, and think critically.
You will be expected and supported in meeting proficiency in the Common Core Standards for the course in tandem with the IB learner outcomes and objectives.
In Diploma Workshop, we will focus on the IB Core - Extended Essay, CAS and Theory of Knowledge.

Proficiency Grading - How you earn credit
What's proficiency grading?
Proficiency grading means that you earn a passing grade in the class by demonstrating you can meet the learning targets or standard - ultimately, you can do the skills and understand the content. Think of it this way. A standard is the task you are ultimately supposed to be able to accomplish. At home, you might be asked to clean the kitchen. A clean kitchen would be the standard. In order to get a clean kitchen, there are lots of things you would need to do - those are the learning targets (the skills and content needed to complete the standard). So in order to have a clean kitchen, you'd wipe the counters, put dishes away, clean the floors, clean the stove, etc. At the end, if you've done all the learning targets related to the standard - you'd have a clean kitchen. If you meet all the learning targets - you meet the standards. When you meet the standards, you are proficient. When you are proficient - you earn a passing grade.
On StudentVue and ParentVue you will not see letter grades or percents for assignments. What you will see are the following:
4 = Exemplary or Exceeding Proficiency
3 = Proficient
2.5 = Approaching Proficiency
2 = Developing
1 = Missing Work
A passing grade translates to a 2.5 or letter grade of a C. If you want to earn higher than a C - you'll need to work a little harder. You might have to work with more complex texts, write in more sophisticated ways, or exhibit work that serves as a model for the expectations. In these courses, there are no Ds.

Class Culture and Expectations
- Be Present - in mind and body: The work we have to do can only benefit you if you are here. Come ready to think and be your best self. Give it all you’ve got. If you’ve got something to share, questions to ask, concerns to raise – do it! This is your education – own it! CELL PHONES are to be OFF AND AWAY unless needed for instructional purposes.
- Be Prepared: Come prepared to class. This means bringing your laptop, your journal (specifically for this class), any necessary materials/handouts/homework, a book to read, and an open mind.
- Be Respectful: Listen to one another. Be willing to hear new views and opinions - you don't have to agree, but there is something to learn from new perspectives.
